Chris Shade is a multi-instrumentalist performer, composer and teacher currently residing in New York City. Born and raised in the self-proclaimed "Soy Bean Capital of the World," Decatur, Illinois, Chris began playing the piano at the age of six. At 11, Chris began playing the saxophone and was immediately drawn to jazz. After earning 6 Downbeat Magazine Jazz Awards in high school, Chris went on to study music at the University of Miami and the Manhattan School of Music, earning Bachelor's and Master's of Music degrees respectively.

Once in New York, Chris quickly became involved with a wide variety of musical genres, from jazz to classical to rock. He has performed in some of the most distinguished concert venues in the city, including Carnegie Hall and Jazz at Lincoln Center, in addition to festivals across the United States and Europe such as the Montreux Jazz Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, Vienne Jazz Festival, and South by Southwest.

Chris has studied with: Dick Oatts, Dave Liebman, Phil Markowitz, Samir Chatterjee, Jamie Baum, Garry Dial and Gary Keller.

Chris has performed with jazz greats such as: Joe Lovano, Ravi Coltrane, Bob Mintzer, Dave Liebman, Dick Oatts, Billy Hart, Ira Sullivan, Bobby Shew, Greg Gisbert and Kevin Mahogany.
